Project Overview

This Aurora bathroom remodel was a designer-driven project, with the finish plan already approved before installation began. The client wanted a bathroom that felt custom, polished, and visually cohesive, with decorative tile details that would stand out without making the room feel busy. The request included an accent mosaic, a built-in wall niche, a new bathtub, decorative black pencil trim, mosaic floor tile, wallpaper, a new vanity, a new toilet, a new mirror, and a glass tub door.

Projects like this are all about control and execution. When a designer has already established the look, the installer's job is to make that vision work in the real room with clean lines, balanced proportions, and careful coordination between every finish surface.

The final result is a sharp, high-contrast bathroom that feels both classic and tailored. The white tile keeps the room bright, the black pencil trim gives the walls definition, the mosaic details add texture, and the wallpaper and vanity complete the designer look without fighting the tile work.

The Challenge

The challenge on this Aurora project was not structural demolition or emergency repair. It was precision. Designer bathrooms are less forgiving because every visual line matters. The black pencil trim had to stay straight and intentional, the niche had to land cleanly within the wall pattern, and the tile layout had to work with the bathtub, the plumbing trim, and the future glass door without feeling crowded or misaligned.

Another important part of the project was balance. The client wanted decorative elements, but the room still needed to feel calm and usable. That meant the accent mosaic had to be present without overwhelming the space, and the wallpaper had to complement the tile rather than compete with it. The bathroom also had to function as a complete daily-use space, so the vanity, toilet, mirror, and glass door installation all had to be coordinated as part of one finished remodel.

Our Solution

Precision execution of a designer-approved bathroom plan

1

Designer-Led Tile Layout

We built the room around the approved design concept and focused first on layout discipline. The main wall tile was installed in a bright white field that kept the tub surround crisp and clean. To add definition, we framed the layout with black pencil trim, which created strong horizontal lines through the surround and helped visually tie the walls together.

2

Tub Surround & Niche Installation

The bathtub was installed as part of the new wet-area assembly, and the wall niche was built directly into the surround so the client would have dedicated storage without relying on hanging accessories or corner shelves. The niche became one of the focal points of the room because it introduced the requested accent mosaic while staying integrated into the larger tile pattern.

The trim around the niche and through the wall field had to be especially precise. Decorative details only look expensive when they are aligned properly, so this project required careful spacing and clean transitions around the recessed opening, the tub edge, and the future glass enclosure.

Mosaic Floor & Finish Coordination

The bathroom floor was finished with mosaic tile, which gave the room another layer of texture and supported the overall black-and-white palette. That floor tied in visually with the mosaic accent in the niche and helped connect the wet area to the rest of the room.

Outside the tub surround, we completed the bathroom with wallpaper installation, a new vanity, a new toilet, and a new mirror. The wallpaper added softness and pattern, while the vanity and mirror gave the room a more finished furniture-style feel. A glass tub door completed the enclosure and gave the tub/shower area a more custom look than a standard curtain setup.

The Results

This Aurora bathroom remodel delivered exactly what a designer-led space is supposed to deliver: control, contrast, and cohesion. The room now has a strong visual identity, but it still feels bright and usable. The black trim gives the tub surround structure, the niche adds both function and a focal point, and the mosaic floor keeps the design from feeling flat.

Just as important, the bathroom feels complete. The tub, glass, vanity, wallpaper, mirror, and toilet all work together, which is what separates a true remodel from a collection of disconnected upgrades. The finished space looks intentional from every angle, and the client ended up with a bathroom that feels custom rather than off-the-shelf.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about designer bathroom remodels, tile trim, and mosaic work

What makes a designer bathroom remodel different from a standard bathroom update?

A designer bathroom remodel usually has a stronger visual plan from the beginning. Instead of choosing materials one by one during the project, the tile, trim, wallpaper, fixtures, vanity, and glass are selected to work together as one composition. That means installation accuracy becomes even more important because every line and transition is visible.

Why use black pencil trim in a tiled tub surround?

Black pencil trim gives the wall layout definition. In a bathroom like this one, it helps break up the white field tile, frame the niche more clearly, and create a finished custom look that feels more intentional than plain field tile alone.

Is a recessed niche worth adding in a bathtub surround?

Yes. A recessed niche gives the client built-in storage without adding clutter to the tub deck or hanging baskets to the wall. It also creates an opportunity to introduce an accent material, which is exactly what happened in this project.

What standards apply to tile work in a bathroom remodel?

TCNA currently lists ANSI A108.01 and A108.02 among its current installation standards for ceramic tile work, covering substrate preparation, general installation requirements, and workmanship. Those standards are part of the foundation behind a clean, durable finished installation.

Why use caulk instead of grout in corners and transitions?

TCNA explains that at changes in backing surface, such as wall-to-wall and wall-to-floor transitions, caulk should be used instead of grout because those adjoining surfaces move independently. For that flexible sealant, ASTM C920 is the standard specification for elastomeric joint sealants used in building joints.

Do decorative tile projects still need movement joints?

Yes. TCNA states that movement joints are needed in every tile installation because tile is a surface layer and stresses can build between the tile and the structure beneath it. Decorative layouts do not remove that requirement.

Is mosaic tile a good choice for bathroom floors?

Mosaic tile is a strong bathroom-floor option because it adds texture, visual interest, and many smaller grout lines that can help the floor feel more secure underfoot. It also works well in projects like this one where the designer wants the floor to contribute to the room’s character instead of fading into the background.

Can wallpaper be part of a finished bathroom remodel?

Yes, when it is used thoughtfully outside the direct wet zone. In this project, the wallpaper helped soften the room visually and gave the vanity wall a decorative layer that balanced the more structured tile layout around the tub.
